Chickpea/Garbanzo planting question.

dedoeJuly 3, 2012

I have just germinated garbanzo beans and planted the seedlings. However, the stem is going into the ground... I thought the sprouted part of a seed is its stem, not its roots. Is this normal for chickpeas to do?

It's normal. The seed embryo is made up of two parts; the radicle, or first root, and the plumule, or first shoot. The root will appear first and direct itself to soil or water. Must, in order to support/nourish the shoot.
