transplanted dappled willow

bird66(6)May 13, 2012

We transplanted a mature dappled willow with a fairly complex root system yesterday. Some of the roots went deeply into the ground, so we weren't able to save them entirely but feel like we were able to move enough with the shrub. After transplanting, we watered deeply. This morning is looks kind of sad and wilting. Is this normal? If so, how long will it take to recover? Thanks!

yes its normal ...

to avoid this.. it would have been better to do it when it had no leaves ...

it will stop doing this.. when it regrows enough roots to support itself...

keep it deeply moist for the rest of the year ... water deeply.. and then do not water again.. until its nearly dry ... mulch heavily ....

all that said.. i bet you couldnt kill it if you wanted ...

willow roots rather easily.. cut about 4 pieces of 6 inches.. and stick them all in one pot.. completely dampen it [potting media would be better than dirt] .. put a one gallon baggie over it.. and put it on the north side of the house.. no sun ever.. and check it once a month ... and i bet they root..

then if the big one dies.. you will have more ... and if it doesnt.. you can give them away as a gift ...

it seems like the leaves are starting to shrivel and die (they're drying out). do you expect that we'll lose all the leaves this year, but the tree will survive if i continue to water?
