Muscadine Grape seed

karyn1(7a)September 3, 2007

I have seeds from green and red muscadine grapes. Will these grow true and when should they be planted? Do they need a period of cold to germinate?

They will NOT be true from seed. Soak the seed in a solution of "rapid grow" for 12 hours then store at 40F for 200 days. Then lightly cover the seed soil temp 68F

Thanks for the info George. Since these do not grow true from seed is it worth growing them? Will they produce a fruit similar to the parent plant?

From what I've read on several sites, it will take at least 3 years for your plants to produce fruit. Some have said it will produce a fruit similar to the parent, some have said you might get a surprise :) I've got seeds I'm planning on planting myself, but I have no idea what a "rapid grow" solution is. And 200 days in the fridge? Wowzers..I'm guessing if you're going to grow these, you need to be in it for the (very) long haul. With loads of patience.
