Pruning Weigela

ryseryse_2004May 9, 2013

My Weigela is leafed out and really needs a major trim. Can I do it after it blooms? If I wait until fall, will it affect next spring's blooms?

Also, can I root the pieces I cut off? I really love it and would like to make another one.

The easiest way to root Weigela is to ground layer the long branches that sweep the ground. Simply burying a long branch by mistake while mulching will often times produce an entirely new plant.

I prune off only the branches on the outside of the shrub closest to the ground every spring. Don't top trim this shrub. Fertilize and deadhead after blooming and you'll be rewarded with a second set of blooms later in the season.
