Evergreen choice

KmanifestJune 30, 2013

I want to plant evergreens on the sides of my stairs at the entrance to my house. I really like the Dwarf Alberta spruce but I am afraid it will be to wide in the long run. What is a good alternative?

Tell us the dimensions you need to fit and we can make more appropriate suggestions :-)

It is important to note that dwarf conifers - like the Alberta spruce - are only deemed dwarf by their rate of growth and that in time they can get quite large. I've encountered many DAS that are 12-15' tall and around 8-10' across. And not very attractive when that size :-(

Maybe something like a boxwood that is both slow growing and extremely shapable/prunable would be a better choice?

the word EVERGREEN.. mean little to garden folk ...

it would include.. perennials...

trees...

conifers....

and even some shrubs ...

etc ....

and there is a forum for each ...

you list one conifer... gal lists one shrub ... etc ...

your best shot.. would be posting a pic of the spot.. and doing a post in each forum.. asking for the local gurus to come up with ideas ... and then you can pic what you want .;... because not all the gurus.. come ot the shrub forum...

the DAS is one of the most common.. over used.. plants i can think of.. we could do sooo much better ....

but w/o a pic.. my mind goes blank ... and i cant name things offhand..

BTW.. is snow removal important .. no use planting something there.. that cant take such ...

pic please
