seed pod identification

droclocSeptember 8, 2008

Have not had success identifying this pod. It was found in a bird bath in NE Oklahoma two weeks ago. By shaking it seems to only have a single seed inside. I was not allowed to open. It is about 2" long. Any ideas?

If not an alien seed pod, then maybe a magnolia tree seed pod.

Finder brought this back to me today, opened. Smooth inside "shell" with a mummyfied looking loose center. Did not have a camera to get photo. The attachment point is the ragged end.

I'm thinking it looks like a cone. Any particular type of conifer(s) growing around there?

How it could have ended up in a birdbath in Oklahoma is a real mystery, but it sure looks like the dried fruit of a Raphia, raffia palm.

Here is a link that might be useful:

Thanks susanc, that is the exact match. Now I can show the finder what produced it. No way this plant could survive exposed in our winters. Thanks again.
