underwater fish-safe paint

david2006October 31, 2007

I have a white PVC check valve that's going to be underwater, so I want to paint it black. Is there an easy-to-use paint commonly available, that is not toxic to fish?

I'm hoping it doesn't require some special marine epoxy or the like.

Hi
Have used acrylic latex in both fresh and saltwater. I find it holds just as well as the two part epoxy at about a third the price. have never had a toxic reaction in any set up. Be sure the object is very clean and dry. Allow it to dry for a couple of days.
One reaction to my large setup that I never expected.
Chinese algae eaters LOVE IT!! lol They have carefully picked off almost all of it in two years lol.. Nothing else has ever bothered it, including encrusting corals.
The algae eaters have grown from 2 to almost 6 inches so I guess it's not only not toxic it's good as a fish food lol
You can get this paint in many colors at craft stores in small amounts. gary

I use Krylon paint on PVC all the time for feeding rings and other fish-related applications. Never had a problem. Let it dry good for a day first though.

Not to change subject but the white PVC pipes that I have in my pond turn dark green over time due to algae growing on them. I'm always nervous with chipped paint in the long run leeching out toxic chemicals.

Hello America,
Isn't it great to say that. I used pool paint in all the ponds you've seen in the episodes of "Full House". It hasn't harmed the fish. It's Holding up great to!

Sincerely,
