propagate smokebush

v1rtu0s1ty(5a)July 15, 2014

Hi folks, 2 years ago I air layered with no success. My smokebush is extremely gorgeous because I always cut it heavily to ground every mid March. I would like to have more. Not sure which technique I should use this time. Will ground layering work for it? If so, should I do it now?

Btw, glad to witness that smokebush isn't just for zone 5a. We experienced polar vortex with temps of -51F for 2 days and a week of -40F. :)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've taken cuttings in spring, dipped them in rooting compound, and stuck them in very moist coarse sand. They rooted pretty quickly, as I recall.

I've ground-layered with success.

With ground layering, did you have to remove some skin of the branch?

Same here, I'm going to plant a few more smoke bush I was surprised to see them with little dieback.

Would be nice to see updates to your landscape. I remembering seeing a slew of in process projects.

PS: You can't count wind chill as actual temps!

Promise, I'll take pictures. It's a mess right now. I killed my lawn last year and seeded. Unfortunately, nothing germinated. :( I'm seeding again this August. :)
