Scabiosa (pin cushion flower) butterfly blue

Hi fellow perennial lovers, I invested in 7 scabiosa plants last year and enjoyed their prolific blooms and dead headed frequently. Towards August they were shrinking and fading out; I thought it might be that they were just "done" for the year and have waited hopefully for them this year in their sunny southern exposure border, but, sadly, I see no evidence of their return. Coleus thrived there, but I like to mix annuals and perennials in that location; the bed's soil is built up because the drainage isn't ideal...ranges from too wet and too dry in full sun. It's a space between a walk that parallels the front porch; 12 inches down we've found some construction "junk" concrete scraps, and short of a big excavation job, I'm continuing to experiment with plants that might make it. So, is my scabiosa dead? Read somewhere that it's evergreen; if so it's definitely doomed...

Well, mine is blooming right now, I would assume yours is a gonner.
