How late can I plant arborvitae in Michigan

susan123_2007October 10, 2009

First of all, I'm in Michigan. Have had unusually cold and rainy weather this fall. We're in the process of building a new 3-car garage and I would like to plant emerald green arbs and knockout roses along the back of the garage (faces south). My neighbors are, unfortunately, going to look at this 36' long white wall, and I'm trying my best to camouflage this for them. Will November be too late for this planting? Should I wait till spring?

ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5

hey sue...

they are conifers... lots of great posts and peeps over there ... they are not shrubs... and the difference will become more apparent.. should you ever have to prune them ...

in my z5 adrian MI .. all planting is done in oct.... giving them about 6 to 8 weeks to get set before ground freeze ...

your odds will be reduced the further you go into nov ....

or for the month after ground thaw ... in early april ...

i dont know about the roses ... i used to get them mail ordered in may .... never thought about fall for those... might want to check the rose forum

good luck
