Worn gear

stoveguyyFebruary 3, 2013

Old lawn tractor trans jammed. I took case apart and all the teeth on 1 gear were extremely worn. Actually down to a razor edge. The opposing gear looked perfect. I did some digging and found a new gear at dealer and figured $70 was worth it to make mower function. Is it normal for 1 gear to wear a lot and the opposite gear to look ok? I would expct both gears to be worn. Perhaps the heat treating on 1 of the gears was off?

It is not uncommon, the larger gear is often made of a softer material. I like to buy both as a set, but have replaced only one.

The trans was a 3speed with a hi/lo lever on side. The new gear came as an assy of 2 gears, side by side and I thought at first it was wrong part but figured out my old unit had 2 separate gears and new part took place of both of them. Whew. 6 week back order to boot.
