Red stem mystery plan

ngrrsn(7)November 29, 2012

My wife bought this a couple of years ago. We know it likes part shade, it doesn't seem to produce a flower, it was intended as an accent plant to a container, it cannot take frost, but will winter over and we can put it out the following year when it warms up.

Plant has several stems growing fairly straight up from the middle, they "snap" pretty easily if pushed. Plant is 2' to 3' tall. Stems are red. Leaves are a light green with white and then yellowing stipes; darker underneath. It almost looks like a houseplant, and may in fact be used for that in some areas? Leaves are crinkly feeling, not smooth. Seems to root easily from cuttings in water.

Can anyone tell us what this is?

Thank you bromelia2010 and Ken! As soon as she heard the name, she exclaimed "YES, That's it!". And we were happy to find I can propagate it from cuttings (need to find specifics) and that it is suitable as an indoor plant. Ken, I am not sure we would have purchased it if it was called chicken gizzard!

Sounds like you've already begun, "Seems to root easily from cuttings in water." Technically, it's already propagated. The other option would be trying directly in soil.
