Manual Transaxle Repair Help, Tips, Advice?

jeffhamulaNovember 1, 2009

I just bought an used 11hp Craftsman 5 speed, 38" deck with a snow plow. It only goes in 1 speed forward and bucks a little and reverse is solid. After checking all the linkages all seemed fine. I am mechanically inclined and a sucker for punishment so I decided to open up the Foote 4360-6 transaxle (to my wifes dismay). It seems that when I slide the ring (what the shift handle slides) the gears don't engage very well (the ones that don't work). Intuitively, it seems like the clutch keys don't engage... My question is, what else should I replace when I have this thing apart? Are there other parts to look at or replace when I do this job? Most of the gears look good - some wear on the pinion and bevel gears, but not bad. Am I on track? Thanks for the help!
