replacement engine for an old TRY-Bilt tiller

I have an old Troy-Bilt tiller with a Clinton 4HP engine and a 2 9/16" mounting pattern. I can't find a replacement carb for the engine, and am looking at replacing it with a bigger engine. Has anyone mounted a Greyhound 6.5HP engine with a 3 5/8" pattern? How did you do it? If not is my only option a Honda or other $350-450 engine?

The only thing I can think of is to find someone to build an adapter plate using countersink bolts to fasten the plate to the engine.

Whats wrong with using a tried and true Briggs, or a Tecumseh? I've seen and owned lots of them with either of those engines on them. I've sold them with American made engines. The only time i had one come in for repairs, was one that the owner forgot to check the oil! And of course, even a mighty Honda won't run long with no oil in the crank-case!
