Name this Plant

Iris-StaceyNovember 12, 2013

I recently received a beautiful bouquet that included the above plant. Ive taken the plant to 3 different florists and 3 different nurseries, and no one can identify it. The globes or orbs on the plant are very puffy like there is air inside of them, and the large one is about the size of a golf ball. They have soft spikes all over them. The leaf is a very slender, elongated oval shape. The stem is fibrous or woody inside of it. When I opened one of the globes, it separated into sections or segments, and there is a very soft seed or core inside of it.

Can you help identify this plant? Thanks so much as I am very curious.

Missing, not to highjack this thread, but is there an obvious way to determine Asclepias fruticosa vs Physocarpa?

CaraRose, trust saltcedar: he knows infinitely more about it than I do.

They are very very similiar. Below is a quote from a web page from another gw member.

Swan milkweed(fruticosa) is similar to the goose plant (asclepias physocarpa) listed above but it has a shorter growth habit with thinner leaves. The seed pods are also pointed on the end while the goose plant is completely ball-shaped.
