Craftsman Garage Door Opener Gear

cobra1616March 30, 2011

I took the cover off my Craftsman 1/2 garage door opener after I could hear the motor running but the door not opening. It is a late 80's model installed new.The nylon gear was chewed up and it looked like it had snow inside the housing.Ordered a gear and put it on and decided to try it out before reinstalling the cover to see if everything was ok.As soon as I hit the remote to watch, the corkscrew looking gear that still looks brand new started to shred the new gear and throwing shavings everywhere.Tried it several times and the same thing happened every time. The weight of the door is not even on the unit as its still unhooked.(I have not put the chain back on the sprocket yet).Any ideas is appreciated.

It is really important that you install all the parts in the gear kit and heavily coat the drive gear and worm gear with the grease supplied. The part number for the kit is 41A2817 and is available almost everywhere. Don't take any shortcuts.

If you order the kit which you should it comes with everything you need including the lube. Sorry I didn't mention that earlier.

I automatically felt it was greased and was waiting to hear the cause because I had not seen this happen. Knowing the need of the grease after replacing 2-3 gears over the years (on different Sears's openers) I periodically grease my units and add the date. I have not lost a 2nd one due to the lack of grease. I have always used wheel bearing grease vs knowing a specific to use. loger
