Care and Feeding of Blades - Gumming

chefwongApril 18, 2013

Hello -

New house owner here....

What is the pratice on pruners, hedge trimmer blades, etc, after use and you get the gummy substance after use. Do you guys use solvent on it everytime after use and then oil it up ?

WD-40 works pretty well for me before and after use. I've heard of people using Pam cooking spray but have never tried it. Carb or brake cleaner will work if they are really bad but I don't think this has to be done routinely.

I use a 3-in-1 oil on my pruners. WD-40 is good for loosening and cleaning, but I haven't had much luck with it as a lube. The CLP gun cleaners work well too. After cleaning up the blades, I apply a light coating of the oil to all the metal parts of my tools.

If you have access to Stoddard solvent, I'd use that. I have about eleven solvent, cleaners, and lubes; most of them would work OK. One common name that is fairly cheap and widely available is WD-40. T-9 is the most expensive product I own, and may be overkill for blades.
