Under Elderberry

danieldumont(9, Bay Area)December 6, 2012

This has appeared in the last couple of weeks underneath an elderberry. Seems to love all of the rain that we have gotten in the past few weeks.

useless facts ...

of the potato family

aka belladonna .. historically used by woman of old.. spanish i believe ... to dilate their pupils.. to entice the menfolk ... perhasp the root of the song spanish eyes ...

and if i am not mistaken.. EVERY PIECE OF IT IS HIGHLY POISONOUS ...

when the kids were around.. it eradicated it with a vengeance .. due to its pretty purple berries ...

the birds will make eradication problematic ... good luck with that

OK Ken - standby, schoolmarm here again. Atropa belladonna, Deadly Nightshade, was the source of the eye stuff and the drug Atropine. Not this plant, Solanum nigrum, Black Nightshade.

Toxicity of S nigrum is a moot point. Some forms are eaten.
