My mom picked this off a vine in La. Any idea what it is? It's about the size of a softball, quite hard with a very rough skin.
I think it's Dioscorea, aka Air Potato.
the link says:
Uncultivated forms, such as those found growing wild in Florida can be poisonous. These varieties contain the steroid, diosgenin, which is a principal material used in the manufacture of a number of synthetic steroidal hormones, such as those used in hormonal contraception. There have been claims that even the wild forms are rendered edible after drying and boiling, leading to confusion over actual toxicity
ps: really now ... an air potato .. who knew.. and only 9:30 am.. and i learned my new thing for the day.. now i can go back to bed.. lol ..
Here is a link that might be useful: link
It is very invasive in South Alabama. I think I am about to get rid of mine. It was brought here from FL.
Thanks all for the info. I've never heard of an air potato. Now I know!
These are very invasive, so I hope you don't plant it. The arboretum here has tried to get rid of it on their property, but can't. (They want a native plant wilderness area, so the invasives are the ones they target for removal).
