How much soil do you need to buy

eddiepwnsMarch 24, 2014

I'm a little new to gardening and was wondering how much soil, potting mix, etc do you need for your plants? Is it really necessary to buy dirt when its everywhere? It can get quite expensive when you have a decent gardening area. Are there alternatives as well? Any info is helplful!

IMO you need to change your screen name if you want to be taken seriously.

That depends. What are you filling? For a one quart pot you will need about 1 quart of soilless mix. For a raised bed you will need enough soil to fill that and that can be found by finding the cubic feet of the bed and converting that to cubic yards, the measure which soil is sold.

If I understand what you're asking...It's only been very recently that people 'bought' a garden by buying bags of soil. Throughout history people have added compost and manure to soil to increase its fertility. You don't have to buy soil if you have good soil or you can make your poor soil better.

Scotts/Miracle Gro Corp. would like you to think their products are required to grow plants, so you will buy them.

Start a compost pile if you haven't already. ;-]

For plants in pots, buy (or make) a proper potting soil.

For plants in the ground, or in raised beds, work with what's already there.

Many people buy "dirt" when building raised beds rather than dig what they have because they perceive paying for it as easier.
