Zero turn mower types

mech0001March 30, 2013

I have decided to get a zero-turn mower and have been watching ads for some time. I have seen a number of older zero turns for sale (JD F620, Woods 6210 for example) with low hours.

These mowers use a rear wheel (or two) and a bolt on front mounted deck. Newer zero turns all seem to have gone to a solid frame and dropped the back wheel(s).

I like the separate deck for storage but am concerned about using the older design on my hilly property. Can any of you zero turn owners comment on what drawbacks(or advantages) the older design may have over the newer models?

I have a Grasshopper mower with an out front deck. It works great getting under bushes and the deck moves up and down with the ground.

I gather that the Woods mower is very similar to your grasshopper.

Can you tell me anything about its performance on hills?

I also have a later model Grasshopper. Works great.
