Learned something about own root roses today.

caflowerluverApril 3, 2012

I was moving a rose I grew from a seed 10 years ago from a big pot to a new location. When digging it up I found out that some of the new growth coming up was on pieces of roots that had broken away from the main root. How that happened I don't know. If this had been a grafted rose, the new growth would probably have been Dr. Huey. With own roots, I have 2 more seedling roses. The seed parent was Angel Face. Here are photos of what it looks like.

That's one of the neat things about own root roses, Clare. As long as the variety is good that way and that type of propagation is appropriate for the climate and cultural practices, many can actually be divided like mums and other perennials after they've developed sufficiently. Many of my roses are divisions of older, own root plants I've grown. Fun stuff! Kim

That's beautiful, Clare! I'd be happy to give one of those seedlings a good home, lol!

Thanks everyone. I had a bunch of seedlings but this is the only one that has survived. Then I got out of growing from seed for awhile. Now I have taken it up again. I love to see what is going to come up. It is a surprise every time.

seil - Sure I would love do a trade. Email me.

Very pretty rose. I like the bud stage. Yeah, own-roots are cool that way. I have an o/r WONDERSTRIPE that I got from Heirloom over ten yrs ago. A long time ago, it popped up like three or four shoots all around the mother plant. It's like a big cluster of plants now. Makes for lots more blooms!
