identify tree - HELP :)

Jane269(6/7 WV)July 20, 2014

I bought a tree 16 years ago for the Baptism of my husband's God-Daughter and can't remember what kind it is.
I think it's in the maple family in the fall leaves are green, yellow, orange, red, and purple, and when they seed they have spikey balls about the size of ping pong balls.
Now that I have my own property I want to plant some :)

My guess is American Sweet Gum, Liquidambar styraciflua.
They have all the Fall colors you mention and the spiky balls.
The leaves look a lot like Maple leaves.
