Looking for a Bow Saw

exmarJuly 25, 2012

Hi Folks,

Decided I need a small bow saw for light pruning. Looking around locally, everything is imported and looks very flimsy. Looking online, found this one. Fiskars is a good name, has good reviews, but the price seems too low for anything decent.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Ev

The Fiskars that I have does NOT have adjustable tension on the blade. You pull the lever down to relieve tension, install a new blade, then pull the lever up to tighten - but it's not adjustable. It's an okay bow saw, but nothing more than okay. Have you looked at the Snap-On bow saws? From the description I read, tension is actually adjustable.

Thanks javert, never thought that snap on made bow saws? Looks like a nice saw, will report back when I get around to ordering it.

Somewhat surprising that amazon sells snap-on, but then everybody sells everything these days.

I had a Stihl Bow Saw some years ago; it was not for light pruning though, it was for cutting wood. You might check out an Ace Hardware and ask them about your needs. I have found their tenured folks to have a handle on almost everything I ever needed or wanted.

Don't know it you are still looking, but try a Sven saw. It breaks down so that the blade is safely enclosed when not in use. Light weight, frame made in US, blade in Denmark. A little over $30, but very handy and can double as a camping tool. Had mine for a dozen years of so. Blades are about $6 each and readily available.

Bow saw is not convenient for light pruning because the "bow" gets in the way in tight places. Try a folding saw with a medium pitch sawblade.
