Red Cascade: how deep to plan?

growitnowMay 20, 2012

When I've planted HTs, shrubs, etc. I've always planted a good 4inches below the crown. I just got Red Cascade (miniature climber) form Antique Rose Emporium. Do I use same planting strategy (plant deeper than crown)? Or plant only to crown?

Never had a miniature climber before or got anything from Antique Rose Emporium, so I thought I'd ask you smart folk!

According to ARE's web site, they only sell roses which are on their own roots (not budded). Since it is growing on its own roots I would plant it at the same level it is growing at in its pot, as there is no "bud union" to protect.

Jackie's advice is what I've followed here in the garden

Agreed! Own roots don't need deep planting because there is no graft to protect from winter.

Agreed with all of the above. I just want to add -- plant it and STAND BACK. This is no little tiny plant. In fact there was a lusty HEDGE of Red Cascade at the American Rose Center in Shreveport.

Thinking it was going to be a dainty little thing, I actually killed a Red Cascade decades ago, by planting it in a teeny little container.

Thank you, this is very helpful. I will plant at pot level.

Though curious - would planting (own root) deeper, hurt the rose?
