if hickory.. look for thin long wisps.. which are part of the compound leaves ...

I'm kind of leaning towards hickory too, maybe Pignut (Carya glabra) with that tight, smooth ridged, web-like bark pattern. Look for some more evidences. For hickories: look at twig buds (post a picture), compound leaves and nut shells.

Looks like young hickory bark, but just a guess without proper things to look at for an ID.

It seems too deeply furrowed to me to be hickory bark, but who knows. It's such a bad angle.

Ken has the right idea. Look at the leaves.
How about a picture of the dead leaves on the ground under the tree? I know they're partially decayed by now, but at least it's a clue.

Bark looks most like mockernut hickory or a young black walnut to me.
