Pagoda dogwood 'Golden Shadows' vs. 'Argentea' ??

ctlady_gw(z6 CT)March 25, 2012

Does anyone in the northeast (we're in Connecticut) have experience with either of these two Pagoda dogwood cultivars? Broken Arrow has both and we like the general descriptions but it seems that Golden Shadows, at least, is quite a new variety so there's not a lot of track record for it. I'm just wondering if anyone has it (or Argentea) growing and if so, what your experience has been. We need to replace some very large euonymus upon which a black birch landed during October's storm. We would like a small tree, flowering, preferably deer resistant but I've sort of given up on that ... Any thoughts (or other suggestions for small trees) welcome. We like the idea of natives and of habitat, like berries, but would like not to actually ENTICE the deer, though they have been feasting on the euonymus every winter for half a century so I expect they will keep coming whatever we plant ... :(

Put up a fence. 'Argentea' makes a striking effect in time (I've seen it about 20' tall). The other might become similarly arresting with age although yellow produces a different feeling than white, the tree might therefore look considerably less ethereal.
