Rainwater collection small apartment deck?

mlissca(9b)June 27, 2013

I am in between gardening spaces as I've sold my home and rented an apartment for a year due to a job change. The waiting list for a community plot is about a year long. In the mean time, I literally just moved into a top floor unit, so part of my deck is uncovered. This gives me access to sun and rain.

I'd like to set up a small container garden on my deck, but I have to bring water in from the kitchen or bathroom in the form of a watering can. Surely there is some way to set up a small water collection system and use that to irrigate a series of containers - mostly window boxes placed on the railing? I'd like to make it self-watering because of my heavy business travel schedule.

This will take creativity, I know, but I don't know where to start. Resources? Suggestions? Experiences?

Everything I have found so far addresses large barrels on large decks that pull off the gutters. Not an option here.

I will take dimensions and pictures and post later today.

Let's take this one step at a time. Where can you obtain a source of water. Preferably not from inside your apt but that is not out of the question but would have to be made quite strong and leak proof. How much does it rain in your area? Can your garden area withstand heavy weight? Do you have to get permission from your building association to do anything inside or outside your apt? Aloha
