Best tree for Utah

Ash2007March 25, 2012

Here's what we are looking for in a tree:

1) Grows quickly (We are only planning on living here 5-7 years.)

2) Minimal amounts of shoots growing up through our grass.

3) Shade.

4) Flowers (or something else that would make it eye-catching.)

5) No pods. (I hate having to pick up the pods individually.)

6) No evergreens.

7) We have a lot of wind.

8) High alkaline clay soil.

9) gets leaves earlier in the year, rather than later. (We have a couple of catalpas in our backyard that don't get leaves until about June.)

What would you suggest?

Utah is a big place. Are you up at decent elevation with the Catalpas leafing out that late?

Cotinus coggygria may work for you.

in my experience.. there is nothing that will grow fast enough to provide any useable shade ... in 5 to 7 years

anything that is worthwhile to have ... anyway

since you are limited as to how long you will be there.. insure at the next house... that you buy the shade you want/need ... and insure it is from trees that will be there in 100 years ...

as compared to trees the 'claim' to be fast growing ...

My elevation is about 4600 feet. At our next house we will be planting bigger, slow growing trees. We will be more concerned with trees that will be there for a long time. Thanks for all the responses. This is all really helpful!
