Deciphering water report and what it means to acid loving plants

Bama_JoeAugust 10, 2014

Afternoon folks,

I found the water report from my local water company and wanted someone's opinion on corrective/preventive things I will need to do (if any). I have 13 young blueberry bushes in the backyard and 5 young rhododendrons in the front (adding more to the front soon..either encore azaleas or hydrangeas.

Any tips I can get would be appreciated!

Joe,

What in the report gives you concern? As far as plants are concerned. You nee to take soil samples of you areas and get them analyzed by the Ag Extension service in your area. That will tell you more of what you need to do than a water analysis. Your water report only shows it is slightly alkaline with some sodium salts in it. JMHO Aloha

Aloha lehua! I wasn't sure how the ph would effect things over time, that's all. I'm getting ready to deepen a flower bed and prepare it with sulfur. Wasnt sure if the ph was going to cause a big battle with keeping the soil acidity or not. Thanks for the response.

I suspect in a climate like Alabama where there is plenty of rain throughout the year, in spite of dry periods in summer, you aren't going to need to worry about alkali sodium salts in munipical water. This is assuming the plants are in ground and get that rain water - different if they were in a covered house.

OTOH in dry climates, long term use of such water could be a problem.

Thanks, David. We sure have our fair share of droughts, but have been blessed with more rain in the past year.
