Battery won't charge - Briggs Stratton 17 HP

rgilbert15June 12, 2009

I have a White L-170AD Lawn Tractor with a Briggs & Stratton 17HP engine. At the start of the season, the battery went dead quickly, started from a boost but wouldn't hold a charge. I figured it was likely the battery and replaced it a month ago.

Now I have the same problem --- dead battery. Obviously it is not charging, but I do not where to start looking for an 'alternator' or something comparable. I have the Whit Operator's Manual and the B & S "manual" that came with the tractor, but nothing shows where a 'alternator' or comparable would be.

Can anyone help?

Thanks ... Ron

The alternator is under the shroud by the flywheel.

You don't need to get to it to test however.

There will be wires coming from under the shroud.
ONE will be a kill wire for the engine.
The other ONE or TWO will be from the alternator.
IF there are 2 Yellow wires, they will go to a Voltage regulator.

Let us know how many wires, the colors and the color of the connector.
