Zinnias- Can cherry 'effectively' substitute for red?

mmqchdygg(Z5NH)March 17, 2009

I'm looking to make a zinnia bed of Red & White flowers this year as I'm hosting one of the events for my HS reunion. How close to red is "cherry?" I'm looking at the Magellan series. I know Scarlet is more 'orangey' than red, but is cherry even worse of a match than the scarlet?

I've used the Dreamland series previously and liked them, but I think they're too short for a huge bed. They were good as 'edgers.' I really don't want to go more than 2- 2/12 feet tall in that bed.

Any other thoughts, or series that you would recommend? (I have salvia 'issues' so I don't dare use those. I need a 'sure thing' and zinnias are just so easy.)

Hi M M! I always thought the cherry color was a little on the pink side, could you use monarda (Jacob Cline)? I'm trying to think of a "good" red and the only other thing I can come up with is the red morning glory. I have a book on colors let me take a look...

Red spider zinnia is red. Really red. I bought my seeds from Park.

T&M has them too.

I just reread your post and caught the clue words "zinnia bed" DUH! So disregard my earlier answer, I concur with Token. If you'd like to try the red spider zinnias I have them and can spare some seed :-)

Here is a pic of cherry zinnia for comparison

There is also fire profusion zinnia

I think I have Red Spider Zinnia seeds from a trade- I'll try those. Thanks for the replies!
