Picking Cantelope....help

vera_eastern_wa(5a-5b)August 30, 2006

Hope someone can help me!

How do I know when a cantelope is ready to pick? Will I get that distinctive smell when it's ready or does it just easily pull from the vine? Is there a soft spot? The netting is complete and buff tan.

Any advice welcomed :)

From the Orgainc Gardening website:

# Harvest most muskmelons when the stem separates easily from the fruit. The skin between the netting turns from green to yellow at full ripeness.

Well allrighty then!! I will look for the signs then. The color between the netting is still green, but it starting to change.
Cant' wait to taste them. These were store bought melons that are a cross between 2 Italian species. I hope I can eventually de-hybridize them :D
