eucalyptus as indoor tree

davidfromdetroitApril 9, 2010

I would like to keep a eucalyptus tree in a container and overwinter it indoors (I live in Michigan where the winters are brutal). To this end, is there a dwarf variety of eucalyptus that does not grow too large or too fast and, if so, does it still offer the pleasant eucalyptus scent?

Does anyone know of any dwarf eucalyptus cultivars that might work as a potted plant?

Has anyone on here ever grown a eucalyptus in a pot for long (besides as a bonsai)?

That reminds me, bonsai might be the answer...not much about them in the Bonsai Forum though.

This is the smallest euc I know of (L edge of photo); one that grows on sandstone plateaus on the Blue Mountains. I don't know much about how they do cultivars, but it must be hard to obtain a pot-sized plant when this is the smallest material they have to work with.

if anyone knows it is Gustavo Iglesias Trabado. You could contact him through the Eucalyptologics website; he is quite passionate about the genus.

You might check with Al/tapla in the Container Gardens" forum. He's quite an expert on plants in containers, even trees, also bonsai.
