Liriope and Deer

lepagesJuly 23, 2014

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with deer eating Liriope? We just moved into a new house and have a hillside that we need to landscape. I'm assuming that we need to be careful with deer since they have been munching on the wild ditch lilies growing on the perimeter of the property. Do they eat Liriope?

I have Liriope all over my landscape beds and deer do not touch them. They eat lots of my plants, but never Liriope. They will eat lilies.

Both variegated and dark green liriope has been browsed by deer here. If you have high deer pressure, they may eat it.
Pachysandra might be a better choice for you.

Yes, they eat my liriope..reluctantly in winter, but they still eat it. They do not touch the pachysandra, hellebores, or strangely, ophiopogon.

Different deer. Mine definitely eat hellebores and pachysandra. They don't eat the liriope, but that may be because they can't find it. I know that's why they don't eat the hostas.

I can't believe they eat your hellebores and pachysandra.
And NOT hostas??? Very strange.

They don't eat the hostas because they can't FIND them.

There are two Frances Williams, and 2 or 3 Invincible hostas under there. Somewhere.

The deer here eat my liriope. In the summer, winter. Doesn't matter. If they see it, they eat it :-(
I thought it was deer proof when I planted them.

They pulled the one I planted for my friend on Long Island up by the roots and ate it. They eat everything out there.
