[novice!] normal knockout growth or problem?

jstep27June 10, 2014

Hello!

I planted several knockout roses this past fall, and they bloomed beautifully this spring. I recently noticed some new growth that seemed to appear very quickly, and the branches are very tall compared to the rest of the bush. After googling to see if this was normal, I found information about rose rosette disease and it made me nervous! I don't *think* my roses look like they have RRD, but they do look unusual. Any ideas from you all?

Thanks in advance!

Looks good to me. The poor rose is finally getting nice weather and is responding by putting out some nice canes.

It's odd growth for a KO, but not rosette disease. I wouldn't worry. If this growth pattern persists for months, it could be a mutation. There are certain polyantha roses that make basal foliage and tall, leafless flower clusters.

That's not RRD growth. It might be something weather related and left over from this bad winter and spring. I'd let them bloom and then cut those canes back and hope the plant grows out more evenly. Dead head those old blooms off the lower growth too. Dead heading and pruning will signal the plant to start growing again. Otherwise, they look pretty healthy. Good job!
