Blue spruce in Florida?

rvird01June 22, 2014

So, I know I'm flirting with disaster, but when in Ohio this weekend I picked up 2 cute little blue spruce trees for $7 a piece. I want to try to grow them in my zone 9a Florida yard in the shade of the longleaf pines. I know I'll have to baby them and hope we have some cooler weather this winter like we did last winter. Has anyone had success growing them in Florida? Thanks!

Rhonda

It will struggle and grow very slowly at best. I know of none larger than a couple of feet tall. Plant a blue cultivar of Cunninghamia lanceolata instead.

Agreed, it's a lost cause. Many have tried.

Even in Ohio where you bought them, they languish after about 40 years due to heat/humidity (esp. the humidity, IIRC).

I agree - the Cunninghamia is the best "blue" conifer for FL. You might also have some luck with one of the bluer Cedrus deodara cultivars, and maybe C. atlantica.

Thanks all. That's what I thought but I'll plant them and enjoy them while they last :(

Arizona Cypress is a worthwhile try in a Florida if you like that blue look.

Good luck. I'm in Georgia. My neighbor got one for free over the winter which he decided to plant. It's brown now.
