Southern Red Cedar turning yellow

slingJune 2, 2010

I have two southern red cedars I acquired from the coast about three years ago. Both are about 4ft and were doing great until one of the trees started turning slightly yellow about two weeks ago. Not the entire tree, but most of it. I checked for scale and didnt see anything. Nothing turning brown/dried out. (Zone 8) Any ideas?

Do you know how to check for spider mites and if so have you checked for that?

Cedar prefer well-drained soil. Any chance roots are water logged?

If it corresponds to a significant change in the weather there may be a relationship.

No, How do I check for spider mites?
We have had rain often. I checked the soil under the pinestraw and it is wet, so the roots could be water logged. The other (healthy looking) tree may not be as wet.

Wet will do it, yellowing of foliage is a classic sign. Mites can be discerned using a hand lens or shaking foliage over a plain surface like a sheet.

I have a customer who has several cedars planted last year in the same row are some other pines. All the cedars are yellowing/brown. These are by the irrigation main valves (big farm) and there is standing water there some times but not in the trees. The pines are fine and look good. What is going on witht he cedars?

I would be money on it being pollen being shed. They take on a yellow color when this happens.

My cedar is potted and about 2 or so feet and the tips are browning is it because it's water logged like you said scotjute?
