Disease or Man-made damage?

mpv.123July 19, 2014

I found these marks on the stem of my Japanese Pagoda tree (photo attached). They look like cuts and leak sap. Does anyone know if this is some kind of a disease or a man-made damage?

I was away for some time and someone else lived in my house. I wonder if they did something to the tree or it is a natural thing. We had an unusually cold and snowy winter, if that makes any difference.

Any ideas on what to do to prevent further damage to the tree would also be appreciated.

Looks mechanical. But focused image might reveal something else.

Looks kinda like someone was testing out their knife/sword edge or the edge of a hatchet? I hope that's the case, rather than disease ... the fix should be fairly easy, but unsightly for a while. Patch the bark up with that sticky tar stuff and wrap the trunk to keep it in place and wood boring pests out.
