Tree rescue! Swamp Chestnut Oak, Green Ash, and Sycamore

acer(6b western NC)July 22, 2014

Hi
I was just at the Asheville (NC) Habitat For Humanity retail store, and they've got these trees out front. They're asking 2 for $5.00 but will be willing to bargain. The trees are in about 2 gallon pots and are about 5 feet tall, about 1 inch caliper. They just gave me an oak because I bought a table inside. Hope someone can give the rest a good home!
Quercus michauxii
Platanus occidentalis
Fraxinus pennsylvanica

Aside from the ash, which is doomed from EAB at some point or another...why not?

Do they look decent or are they on their last leg?

Q. michauxii - one of my FAVORITE oaks. I have several seedings I sprouted this spring...one of them is apparently a mutant as it is nearly 3' tall and still growing, the others are all around 12" or so.

2 gallon pot for a one inch trunk.. isnt much root mass for that sized tree ...

No ash. You will have a tree which needs a bath in poison every year to even stand a chance.

Great deal on that oak- 2 gallon pot for one inch trunk, Ken may say isn't much root mass for 1 inch trunk, but , my experience of big box store oaks is usually one gallon root mass for 5 ft and above tree. So I figure that tree Sw Ch Oak I hope does great with lots of irrigation.
