Honor Rose

quicksilver(z6bMA)July 20, 2010

I have a chance to get 5-7 Honor rose bushes in 2 gallon pots from Lowes for $7.50 ea. (or hopefully less). I like the fragrance. I assume I will be putting up with increased Japanese beetles due to the light color of the rose. My biggest apprehension is over Web research I have done that reveals this variety is more susceptible than most to Black spot and other nasty beasties seen and unseen. What sayest though you all princes and princesses of Rose knowledge??!!!

Honor is a wonderful white but it is not reliably winter hardy where we live. My experience is that it will not thrive and winters like the last one will nearly do it in. It is a clear white with nearly perfect HT form and once was a great show rose but it is not a great bloomer and has all the extra problems of white roses. Trying to grow seven of them would be quite a job.

Honor is lovely, but it is Blackspot prone. Their are many newer white roses that are hardier & more disease resistant than Honor, however I doubt your will find them for $7.50. You have to decide what is more important...price or a superior rose.

Regardless how reasonable the price, 'Honor' would not be a bargain in your zone. It performs really well only where conditions are warm and dry. The blooms don't stand up well to rain -- or even to heavy morning dew. As for JBs, I don't think they're any more attracted to light colored roses than they are to deeper shades -- thrips, however, are a different story.

Ditto, mine had various problems and froze out the second winter. Paloma Blanca (from Roses Unlimited) is relatively hardy and disease resistant. Garden Party is hardy and prolific but will need fungicide. Pope John Paul II is said to be above average, but I haven't grown it.

I've heard that Honor is a good rose in California but troublesome to grow anywhere else.

I have Garden Party and I love it, but I wouldn't call it white, necessarily. (At least not my GP.) It is certainly hardy, though. Mine's cream-colored to light yellow, and when I feed it fish, the edges get pink. It's a thorny nightmare, however. Well-armored, I guess I should say.

What about Karen Blixen? Anyone in zones 5 or 6 grow it & love/hate it?

Thank you all for the great feedback! I was not aware that this variety was not hardy in New England. I will keep looking. I need to plant roses that will be perennials, not annuals.

My Garden Party gets pink edges without fish..I think it is the nature of the plant.

To the OP, I agree with carefully considering a bargain plant that stands a good chance of pooping out over winter. Then it's no bargain at all. I suppose if you got ONE and it died it would be hardly any different than putting in a flat of annuals.

I really wanted my Garden Party to have those pink edges--that's why I bought it. It was the first rose I ever purchased. When we moved into our house, it had only 1 rose, and it was pure white. I wanted something creamy with a little pink to it. My GP bloomed for two years, looking just like this: (Please forgive the size of the photo, but I'm keeping it large so you can see the definition in the petal edges)

After fishy food, the entire plant's blooms changed to this:

I like the 2nd one better, but I haven't fed her since late May and the pink is pretty much gone on the new blooms.

For me Garden Party got more pink edges in cool weather. Flowers are also larger in cool weather. Back in the day, before show winners had to have needle noses, the huge cool-weather blooms of GP absolutely killed at fall rose shows.

GP is a fine HT for the Southeast, East, and Midwest, especially valuable for its hardiness in zones 6 and 5. On the West Coast it is susceptible to mildew. The plant is sturdy, bushy, and prolific of good single stems (as well as being quite thorny).

It's certainly what got me hooked! Good thing I didn't start out with a fussy rose, huh?

I'm with michaelg, mine is pinker in cooler weather. Sometimes I get some very white blooms.

Flaurabunda, I had to do a double take when I saw your picture..looks almost just like one I took of mine! Except the brick in the background is brown instead of grey. (Okay, so not quite the same, lol!)
