Rose Varieties A-Z

jbeg0508(6)July 13, 2011

Help! My daughter is 6 and we homeschool. I encourage her to choose one thing to learn about in addition to the school work I require of her. I am an avid gardener and recently have been interested in roses and we have 6 new rose varieties growing this year and she has really enjoyed seeing them grow from bare roots planted in March to leafy, lush plants full of blooms this summer.

She has decided to learn more about roses. We thought finding one variety of rose for each letter of the alphabet would be fun and we'll make a notebook of sorts with a page devoted to each rose type.

Please offer suggestions! She is 6 so showy and PINK are preferred. :-)

Thanks in advance for your help.

The David Austin catalog and website is another resource.

Perhaps your local public library has a copy of the "American Rose Society Encyclopedia of Roses" that you could borrow. It is arranged in alphabetical order and has lots of pictures.

If you go to the VIntage Gardens website "vintagegardens.com", and click on "roses" and then select a type of rose, an alphabetical list of all of those they have of that type will come up. I think you may also be able to do that by color. Have fun!

Another book to consider is "R is for Rose" by Carolyn Parker. The author's concept is the same as the one jbeg has for her daughter's project -- ie, a rose for each letter of the alphabet. The book contains lovely photos accompanied by uninformative, treacly prose. Kind of a rose/self-help/coffee table book combo.

(Tried to provide a link, but there's a bug in the system today.)

Happy to suggest as an 'S' rose for your daughter the beautiful, exhibition bloom form, deep pink with creamy centers, hybrid tea rose SIGNATURE! :-D Her blooms are BIG, SHOWY & PINK so your 6 year old daughter might just be thrilled with growing this rose. She's one of my FAVORITES!!

Roses unlimited also lists roses in alphabetical order. A quick scroll show everything but a rose beginning with "x,"
but there is one named "X-Rated" you can use to complete her list.

HelpMeFind has an alphabetic listing of all of their roses. "XXL" is an alternate name for the rose Buxom Beauty, which has large, full, deep pink blooms (and perhaps a better name for a 6-year-old to put in a book).

How about Xanadu? No photo on HMF, but G-Rated for 6 year olds.
