Sprouts in the Pacific North West

clc70(8 Wa.)April 24, 2012

Finally! We've had such a cold spring. But things are finally starting to pop. The last few days have been in the 60 and 70s. 121 of my 304 milk jugs are showing green. My annuals in the green house are busting to get out. But it's still not safe for them outside. We could still get a couple of frosts yet.

I've sown 346 jugs and 220 have sprouted. Except for the tender annuals, tomatoes and peppers (which I don't count as wintersowing since I sow them on heat pads) every thing is outside. I just throw some row cover over them if it threatens to get frosty. It's still early to plant most of them in the ground, but I will probably get started next week. I'm hosting a plant swap this weekend so I've been way too busy to even think about planting anything - just digging and dividing! I will share some of my wintersown babies, too, of course.

I try to keep track of the frosts here on the coast and we've had white mornings several years on May 1, not many after that. Of course it only takes one you aren't expecting :)

So much wet and cool weather for April, I just now found cerinthe seedlings (self sown) this last weekend, about a month later than usual.

I think I will move some of my annuals out of the green house today. Will put them in the shade under my noble fir trees. I can't put the petunias out there though. The slugs would have a feast.
