How should I sow seed now?

burry(7 Maryland)April 26, 2014

For the first time in awhile, I did not get any winter sowing done. Should I place my seed right in the ground now or in my winter sowing containers so the seed does not get blown around from the rain? I never had much luck with self-sowing and great luck with winter sowing, but am willing to do what is most efficient at this time. Any suggestions are welcome. Also is it too late for me to order seeds that I had intended to order to winter sowing?

I'm still using the WSing method, and I often do so into the first week of May or so. I figure even if the temps are warmer, the containers give a bit of added protection from weather and critters, and gives a little heat boost as well. And it's been so darn cold this spring, I figure it's still cold enough to use the containers anyway! You are a zone warmer than I am, but it seems it's been a cold spring everywhere this year.

Good luck!

I'm still using the WS method as well. Just put two containers out over the weekend and will do a few more in the next week or so. I like the added protection -- the seeds have a better chance than they do out in the garden where they'll have to battle the elements.

As for ordering seeds, I don't see why not unless it's something that needs cold stratification.

I always use the wintersowing method for any seed at any time of year. I think the consistent moisture provides the best chance for germination. Also, you always know whether they sprouted or not and don't lose track of what or where you planted. You could even place the milk jug or other container exactly where you plan to plant the seedlings once they sprout, if it's not too difficult to water them there.
