Tiny pellets dropping from Oak in Autumn

MSalb(7)October 6, 2013

I have a large old oak tree in my yard in Washington, DC. It drops thousands of tiny pale tan pellets in the autumn. I know that there are some oaks that drop bug larvae in shells, but I have always heard of those on the other side of the country. Also, I have so many, they are nearly a carpet. Does anyone know what they are?

w/o a pic.. or even a size indication ... its hard to get much of anywhere with this.. other than a WAG ...

soooo... google: oak gall

of which.. i never heard of them being regional .... but i might not be up on gall lore ....

if so.. its a minor leaf condition.. and the leaves are falling off.. so nothing to do about it.. and in fact.. many are beneficial bugs....

M, wr need much improved information to ID the pellets. What do these pellets look like? What size are they ("tiny" is a useless adjective)? Are they soft or hard?

I'm suspecting one of the oak galls, too.....but without some help from you...or a picture.....I'm unwilling to guess.

Esh...I've never seen pale tan caterpillar frass. It's dark green, almost black from the chlorophyll in the leaves.

Do they look like tiny, undeveloped acorns?
