Odd the things you notice only in the fall. I totally don't recognize this. At first I thought it was witch hazel, but that looks completely wrong now that I look it up. Any ideas?

Agreed; the leaves (or leaf buds if the leaves dropped) should be opposite one another on the stem. Witch hazel has alternate leaves, btw.
