Joe-Pye seed

tomerrol(z7atn)September 9, 2011

Can Joe-Pye seed be winter sown ? I saw this plant when I was visiting Ashville, NC farmers market. several of these plants were among other plants and the Joe-Pye plants were covered with butterflys where the other plants were not. They had no seeds for sell at that time. I am looking for some Joe-Pye seed to winter sow if anyone has ever done this sucessfuly.

thanks

Tom

Easy peasy. JP here is in bloom right now. I tend to see a lot of large packets come through the Newbie Seed Project.

JP looks like dandelion seeds with the fluff. I leave the fluff on. Mother Nature does likewise.

Tom - my neighbor next door has what looks to me like chocolae Joe Pye that I harvest seeds from in the fall. The seeds aren't ripe until late October/early November but they're plentiful--I could probably ship you an entire box of them but will be happy to send you a generous trade's worth in exchange for postage when they're ready to harvest.

I've got standard Joe Pye Weed and I think the seeds of some plants may be ripe now. I was thinking of checking them tonight, anyway. I'll let you know.

Lost track of what I was doing. I now have multiple trade-sized packs of Joe Pye all wrapped up. My plan is to send them as a donation for the newbie seed project. I still have tons of blooms at various stages of maturity, including ready to harvest seeds. If anyone wants them, e-mail me. I'm notoriously slow at responding to e-mails, but it should happen in time to get seed for planting time.LOL
