When to collect green bean seeds?

prairiemoon2 z6 MASeptember 18, 2011

I let a lot of larger string beans stay on the vine the rest of the season and I was hoping to use them for seed next season. Anyone know how to tell when they are ripe and ready to collect?

I collect bean seed when the pod is brown and cracks open at the seam by pressing on it. Then (to be on the safe side) I let the beans air dry before storing. I'm pretty sure only the plump ones (not shriveled or sunken in spots) are viable.

Thanks CMK, Looks like I have a ways to go then. They're not brown yet. Too bad I really wld love to pull down the vines. I think I will have a ton so that will be good any way.
