Yvonne's saliva Seeds when should I sow?

ladyrose65December 24, 2012

I cannot get Yvonne's Salvia seeds to germinate, nor the Whopper Lighthouse from Parks. I sowed in last season in January because they have a hard coat. I have very little seeds left of the Yvonne's. When is the best time to sow, should I cover the seeds or just set on top of soil?

Hi Ladyrose, you can winter-sow Yvonne's Salvia, but since it's a tropical annual and doesn't need any cold stratification, I just sow them in late March or early April, and they germinate pretty quickly. I usually just press the seeds into the surface.

Slugs LOVE Salvia and are the biggest problem I have with getting the seedlings going. They will eat the sprouts right in the containers and I usually sprinkle Sluggo or Escargo around the seedlings when planting out.

I have extra Yvonnes seeds from 2011 if you want to get some seeds for SASBE.

Hey Ava!
Ditto what Terrene said. Mid-April for me.

Beautiful pic Pvick! Would make a lovely Christmas pot - right along side a Poinsetta...:)

My Yvonnes did okay this past summer, but was kinda small due to drought in July. But the previous year they did great. Here's some of my annuals from 2011, the Yvonnes was pumped! This picture does not do it justice. I collected plenty of seed that year.
