Frankly, it looks like a red onion.
I'm gonna say it's a Hyacinth, and probably a red / pink / purple one at that. That bulb looks huge, but I can't find a for-sure size on how big they can get.
They're hardy to your area, so I'd plant one in about a gallon size pot, good draining soil, leave it outside all winter. See what you get.
Where did the bulb come from? Did you buy it? Was it given to you?
If it has grown and overwintered before in the ground in your area, I think it looks a bit too big to be a hyacinth
Oh, gosh it does look like a hyacinth, but it's too big for that.
Is it giant squill? I ask because it's a hyacinth relative.
Otherwise I would start thinking about ornamental alliums. Most of them don't have the "skin" but maybe some variety that I'm not aware of does.
